Children's Literacy Foundation (CLiF)

Over the past few months I've visited libraries, large and small, all of which seem to be well supported. Not all libraries are so fortunate, especially those in small towns that struggle financially even in the best of times.

With that in mind, I'd like to introduce you to the charity that will benefit from this year's Summer Reading Program, the Children's Literacy Foundation (CLiF).

CLiF started in 1998 with a focus on rural libraries. Based in Waterbury Center, VT, it provides new library books for children in towns in Vermont and New Hampshire that have a population of less than 5,000.

I have not met in person Duncan McDougall, the Executive Director of CLiF. I imagine he has boundless energy, for in the past 11 years he has expanded the mission to 15 different programs including author/illustrator visits, low income housing libraries, and free books for children visiting parents in prison.

I'm very impressed with how this organization has focused on serving the most vulnerable populations in our society. If you have a moment, go on over to the CLiF website and take a look at all the great things they do.

As in the past, I will be donating money to CLiF based on your participation in the 2009 Summer Reading Program. The program starts in two weeks and there is another surprise regarding the program that I would like to announce ... next week.
