Small Time Operator

Author: Bernard B. Kamoroff, CPA
Published: 2002 (7th Trade Edition)

The book covers a variety of topics regarding starting a business. It delves into more complex forms (LLC's and corporations) but the focus is on small proprietorships.

First published in the early 1970's, the layout (not to mention the cartoons) seems to have stayed in that era. There are some chapters dedicated to computers and the internet, but even these seem dated, perhaps late 1990's.

A few nuggets I didn't catch in other books: keep copies of invoices/contracts for tax purposes to document income; an exception (at least as of 2002) for artists, writers, and photographers in the write-off period of expenses for their 'products'.

Overall, not a bad book as an introduction to running a business. The NOLO publications, while more focused, are probably a better buy.
